About Karen

     Triple Goddess

Collection of Pennsylvania State University

The Triple Goddess and related forms came to me in 1992 while I was living and teaching in Luxembourg while on a leave of absence from my teaching position in Pennsylvania . In Luxembourg, I had no access to a potter’s wheel. This fortuitous limitation caused me to begin hand building for the first time in years. I began making sketches of seed pods and other natural forms that I found while walking to work. These sketches evolved into three dimensional freestanding sculptures which independently began to sprout bellies, arms and breasts. Like Marcel Duchamp, I felt as if merely an assistant, helping these ladies come to life.

These pieces are made from a raku clay body fired to 1860 degrees. They are handbuilt using the coil method and the potter’s wheel. After bisque firing, they are glazed and/or smoke fired. They are 18-36” in height. Price range: $350-$1200.
