Herbal Body Oils for Therapy and Healing
The young buds of balsam poplar trees secrete a powerfully aromatic and healing resin high in salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. The scent of this oil is sweet and clean, like the freshest spring day. It is analgesic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Massage into tired muscles and joints, pour one tablespoon into hot bath water, or apply to minor skin irritation. Enjoy the uplifting scent. Balm of Gilead oil is one
of the first infused oils that I learned to make. In 1981, I was living on the
banks of the Russian river in Kodiak, Alaska, under a Balsam Poplar tree. In
spring, the buds of the tree began to ooze with yellow green sap that filled the
air with a miraculous scent. I read one of Jean Rose's herbals to learn that
people had been making analgesic oils with this sap and/or the sap of trees like
it for centuries. I still have a bit of the original oil, kept in a rose colored
glass bottle that belonged to my grandmother.
Rosemary is traditionally used to stimulate memory, lift the spirits, and ease congestion.
Rub
into temples and chest, pour one tablespoon into the bath, or apply anywhere for
general skin care and characteristic piney scent of fresh Rosemary.
Calendula is the flower famous for its gentle emollient and healing properties on tender, sensitive skin. Recognized for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, Calendula is useful for treating wounds, burns, and diaper rash , and minor skin irritations. Delicately scented, it makes a lovely body oil for general skincare, and for the bath.Calendula Rose Oil is a famous
hot oil conditioner for light colored hair. It is useful for dry hair or
flaky scalp conditions. Heat the oil by immersing the bottle in hot water, or by
heating in a pan. Massage .5 to 1 ounce into damp hair and scalp. Cover with a
towel or shower cap and wait for 30 minutes. Shampoo normally. Use once per
month or as needed.
St. John's
Wort blossom, Comfrey root, Calendula Rose Oil and Tea Tree essential oil are combined for their
anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Massage into dry, inflamed, irritated skin to cool and relieve itching due to eczema, insect bites, sunburn, diaper and other
rashes, or to treat minor burns. This is a stronger preparation than Calendula Rose
Oil by itself. St. John's Wort can cause sensitivity to the sun in some
people.
Capsaicin, one of the active constituents of the Capsicum annum pepper, and ginger, are famous for relieving deep arthritic pain and reducing inflammation. Massage generously into affected joints for penetrating heat and relief. For massage only. Avoid contact with mucous membranes of any kind. Not for use during pregnancy. Most likely, a similar topical preparation is sold in your local drugstore. I have tried them all, but nothing helps my knees like this natural blend. For especially effective treatment, apply oil to
affected area then cover with a cotton wrap of some kind and let the oil work
for several hours. If you request, white cotton gloves will be added to your
orders as a free gift. You can make your own handmade wrap at home by cutting
the toe off of clean socks and slipping the sock on like a tube. Ace bandages
also make good wraps.
