Balm of Gilead Oil The young buds of balsam poplar trees secrete a powerfully aromatic and healing resin high in salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. The scent of this oil is sweet and clean, like the freshest spring day. It is analgesic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Massage into tired muscles and joints, pour one tablespoon into hot bath water, or apply to minor skin irritation. Enjoy the uplifting scent. Balm of Gilead oil is one of the first infused oils that I learned to make. In 1981, I was living on the banks of the Russian river in Kodiak, Alaska, under a Balsam Poplar tree. In spring, the buds of the tree began to ooze with yellow green sap that filled the air with a miraculous scent. I read one of Jean Rose's herbals to learn that people had been making analgesic oils with this sap and/or the sap of trees like it for centuries. I still have a bit of the original oil, kept in a rose colored glass bottle that belonged to my grandmother. .5 oz. $5.00; 2 oz. $10.00; 4 oz. $16.00. Larger sizes available upon request. Ingredients: Olive oil*, Sunflower oil*, fresh buds of Populus balsamifera*, Vitamin E oil (Tocobiol non-GMO certified Mixed Tocopherols).*Denotes certified organic. |
